The Return of the Living Room

brynheimann

Those who have lived through a major home renovation will be familiar with the fact that during construction, you will largely be confined to areas of your house that are not impacted by the reno.

In our case, that left us with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. So, for the duration of the construction project (several months) we used a bedroom as our living room and most of our furniture was in our garage. I think we can all agree that the situation was less than ideal.

The contracted construction ended for us on July 6th, 2022. However, we had narrowed scope to make the project affordable which meant that even though the construction was "over", we still had a lot to do to make our new space livable. We embarked on a long and painful painting journey rife with some DIY mistakes before we could even begin to think about flooring the new space.

Once the interior painting was finished, we were/ are in the middle of the exterior siding project -- so for several weeks nothing happened inside the house...until we had some rain days and the Mr. decided to seize the carp. Enter: the return of the living room!

In order to get the living room back, we had to lay an OSB sub-floor and begin flooring the new space.

We already had the luxury vinyl plank on hand, having purchased it back in March of 2022. We went with a Shaw product that had many of the features we wanted.

If you are currently looking for a product, here is a short list of features I would recommend:

  • Embossed in register texture

  • Includes a good locking mechanism

  • Robust wear layer

  • Waterproof

  • At least 8 unique images

I did not know to look for unique images and the product we selected has only 5 unique image patterns. In hindsight, I would have loved to have had at least 8 which helps with variability/ lack of visual repetition . That said, overall we are still pleased with our choice.

Ok, ok. Enough. You want pictures, right?

We aren't nearly done flooring. There is a reason you don't get pictures of the rest of the house, ha! However, we do have our living room back and that seems like a big victory for the moment. I'll take it.
