The framing stage of our addition project is now well underway and so far, this has been the most exciting part! Those of you who have built a custom home, or completed your own addition will know that you spend so much time planning, saving, and doing all the "un-fun parts" that when you get to see things come together in real life, it is pretty gratifying.
These pictures are from April 21, 2022. We can see here that the crew has begun framing the upper level.

One of the big reasons to add on the way we are is to enhance the lake view. We will be replacing one 72x80 window with 3 windows. A larger 72x72 in the middle flanked by 2 60x60s to give us lake view across the whole front of the living room.

This side doesn't have any windows. We have so many windows throughout that we decided we would need at lease one wall to use for other things, like have a fireplace.

This wall has a patio door framed in. Someday we will build a front-facing deck and the patio door here will provide the access to that deck from inside the house.

The below pictures are from April 23, 2022 - and we are really starting to see the project progress quickly now. Today they stood up the front facing wall on the upper level and installed the roof trusses.

The cool shot below gives you an idea about how the new living room will look. One thing I wanted to mention is that I had to fight the Mr. for the raised ceilings. He thought that they would cost a fortune. However, when we met with our designer he gave us this sage wisdom: If you install the right energy heel trusses, you can get your raised ceilings without having to spend an arm and a leg.
I am very happy that I fought for the ceilings. I was standing in the new living room earlier today and the height makes everything feel so much grander. Hear this now: If you are starting your own project you may have to make sacrifices and you may have to compromise, but also don't be afraid to fight for the things you really want.

I have posted so many pictures that are right up close to the house, I thought it would be nice to share this shot that was taken from our dock to give you a sense of how the addition impacts the overall aesthetic of the house. Please note: We will be re-siding the whole house as a part of the project -- but that stage is a ways off as we wait for warmer, dryer weather.

One more note at this stage of the project, the Mr. used to roof in his younger years and took up the roofing himself. He had some trouble tying in the new and old roof, so he ended up tearing off about half the existing roof and re-roofing that as well as roofing the new addition -- this was a LARGE effort and took him probably 18 hours over the past 2 days. Very grateful for my handy Mr. -- that work saved us thousands, and importantly is keeping the house dry during a very wet spring.
