At our old home, we had a large master bedroom with a lovely walk in closet and it was great. It looked like this (see below). It was bold and it maybe didn't belong in a magazine, but it was a comfortable space for us. Let's just say moving to the lake does not come without some sacrifice (at least if you are moving to the lake on a budget!)
Master bedroom at our old house, look how spacious it was! Le sigh.
Here is what our current master bedroom looked like the first time we met it.
I'm not sure if the scale really comes through in the pictures, but just trust me when I tell you that this master bedroom is much smaller than our old one. Also, notice the lovely off-center window on the left that is located right over where your bed must be placed. Those of us who crave symmetry hate these sorts of design challenges!
On the plus side, the master bathroom is exclusive to this room (no double doors or sharing the master bathroom with anyone else -- woot!). Also, the floors you see in this picture are original hardwood floors -- they could stand to be sanded and refinished but are in relatively good shape.
Oh, also worth mentioning is that almost every window was replaced in this house in the recent past, which is huge since windows from the late 1960s were not nearly as energy efficient as the windows they make these days.
As with just about everything when we first moved in, the master bedroom was a wreck, and pretty much stayed a wreck until the master bathroom project concluded. However, I am happy to report that we recently made some big progress.
Alright, here's what we did:
-We painted the rest the trim and closet doors
-We added an accent wall behind the bed with faux board and batten
-We sacrificed one of the closets as a "TV stand nook"
-We added a glorious, beautiful rug
-Importantly, we strategically covered the off-center window with an oversized mirror
-We added a curtain rod and curtains to the other, uncovered window
So exciting! I just love the accent wall; it draws your eye up in a small space and adds dimension. Which is to say -- it makes the room look fancier. And this rug...oh my heart. I was so worried about purchasing the rug online but I have to tell you. it. is. awesome. Somehow amazingly soft while also being low pile, plus the colors tie in very well and the pattern gives this room a little "pizzaz".
No, your eyes don't deceive you. The closet doors are a different color than the accent wall, but I think it works. The closet doors are Sherwin Williams Ellie Gray, the accent wall is Sherwin Williams Repose Gray.
Few things with this next picture: The curtains are tucked up due to a vent and should be mounted wider, I've mentally added that to my "honey do" list. Also, I know it would not be everyone's preference to sacrifice a closet so that they can watch TV from bed, sorry folks -- we are "those people" that use the TV to fall asleep. Finally, I do not like the ceiling fan. I have already been eyeing a replacement that is prettier AND comes with a remote control, so you know it is only a matter of time now.
Even though I called this a reveal, this bedroom is still a work in progress. There are outlet covers on the ground, and frankly most of the outlets and switches should just be updated. My nemesis, the ceiling fan needs to be replaced. I also have a fun idea to paint the inside of my lampshades. I am definitely refinishing the beautiful vintage dresser that the TV is on. The hardwood floors should be refinished - but when does anything ever really feel "done" as a homeowner anyway?
I think it looks a lot better than it did so I guess I'll call it a reveal if I want! So there.
Fun fact, the accent wall is also Sherwin Williams Repose Gray (like our interior doors), but it looks a lot different on the accent wall. I like it in both spots plus I didn't have to buy extra paint, winning!
