I know, I know another post about the process -- but this is where we are at right now. In the post about selecting a contractor, you may recall that we reduced the scope of the work he would do in order to make the project affordable for us.
This makes the project less expensive, but is not without substantial (labor) cost!
Here is a brief listing of items that we must get sorted on our end in order to keep those dolla dolla bills.
(1) We (mostly my Mr., but I did help) - removed a giant 2 story fireplace from the center of our house. This was a large effort that had us tossing an endless number of cinder blocks into our side yard for several weekends. Although it was a lot of unpleasant labor hours, we did complete the removal without professional assistance and, in doing so, we were able to save $6,000.00 - which we can now spend on something else.
(2) We will be taking care of insulating the new addition. Although this will save us approximately $5,000, we do estimate that we will pay roughly $2,500 in addition to the contract price to purchase the insulation ourselves.
(3) We will do the interior trim work and interior painting on our project. This will result in a $6,000 - $8,000 savings. However, as with the other scope limiting items, we will have to purchase paint/ trim and do this work ourselves. So far we have purchased approximately $300.00 of paint in anticipation of the need.
(4) My wonderful hubby will take on the window and door installations. This saves us $10,000 in contract price, but again - we need to buy our own materials for this. We have not yet made the purchase, but we estimate that we will be spending appx $5,000 on windows and doors. We will be putting in 5 new windows, one set of french doors, one patio door, and one new exterior door.
A brief cost comparison on just these 4 items:
