Remember this bad boy?
Right, well - recall that in the remodel plans this fireplace is nixed. So, we didn't want to spend a lot of money doing anything to it. That said, even without the garden variety "stuff" that was on the fireplace during the house showing -- we thought that the very dark brown brick was a bit of a bummer.
Let's check out some "before" pics so you can see what we were up against. For the record, I'm not a big fan of TVs over the fireplace - but in current state we do not have a choice. This is the only place for a TV.
Step 1: We decided that we would paint the darn thing. We weren't sure if we would like a whitewashed look, but we tried that out first. See pics below for the whitewash stage of the project.
There are likely some folks who prefer the whitewash look, but we learned pretty quickly that we don't fall into that camp -- enter Step 2: We decided we would paint the darn thing Repose Gray.
Gosh it looks so much better! BUT...look at all those cords. This brings me to Step 3: Tame the wild cord monsters and add a little styling.
Update: When we worked with our contractor to reduce the scope of work, one of the items that we cut was the $6,000.00 line item to demo the fireplace. This means that in December of 2021 the Mr. and I (but mostly the Mr.) tore out this 2 story monster of a fireplace. Although the demo went quickly, maybe 35-40 hours between the two of us. It was a lot of heavy lifting and produced a lot of rubble...not to mention that we also created a large gaping hole between our main living level and the basement. I'm not posting a picture of this, but you can imagine...it doesn't look very good.
We look forward to when we are in a position to add a fireplace back to the home once the addition goes up. As the Mr. would say "If you want an omelette, you're going to have to break some eggs."
